About the event
Hélène Sechehaye (musicologist, FNRS-ULB) & Hicham Bilali (guembri, singing, dance)
The purpose of this musical presentation is to explore the different meanings that the word 'travel' has for the Gnawa community. Travel is an integral part of the Gnawa community's identity. Their songs, which have been passed down orally for centuries, tell of the forced displacement of their ancestors. From the original exile of the first Gnawa to the initiatory journey of the initiates, through the jola necessary for the apprenticeship of the musicians, we will cover all these journeys, ending with the migration of the Moroccan Gnawa to other countries, especially Brussels . By settling in Belgium, the Gnawa of the diaspora come closer to the experience of their ancestors. And what if, instead of a rupture, the move could be a guarantee of continuity in tradition?
The conference will be interrupted by musical contributions by Hicham Bilali, who will illustrate the various aspects discussed.
The participants will have the opportunity to follow a short workshop after the musical conference
